April 2022 - Spring Fling

I did a little swatch test to see what my hot pink zebra looks like. I wasn’t sure if it would be too busy and disguise any pattern I knit in but I don’t think it’s too busy so I’m going to try Diagon Ally socks. The editor in me wants to point out that I didn’t misspell Ally. The pattern designer did.

I hope no one minds, I am kind of spamming this everywhere I am, so if you follow me on social media or anything, you may see this more than once. My sister and her husband have worked hard all their lives and whenever they weren’t working to support their family, they were helping out in their community as an EMT and volunteer firefighter for over 20 years. Now they are both disabled and retired and can’t afford to give their yard the love it needs. They are entered into a “Worst Yard” contest and up to win a total yard makeover of up to $40,000 and I am not above begging for help for my sister! If you could go to this website and vote for her (it should pull her entry up, but if it doesn’t, you are after Kelly Johnson) you don’t have to be a resident of the area to vote and I would REALLY appreciate every vote for my sister who was my second mom!

Because I was curious, I did a very quick internet search which showed “Diagon Alley” and other spelling variations of that are already sock pattern names.

I have never been a Harry Potter fan. (ducking behind my yarn stash in case someone throws a book at me…lol) What I do know about it is that it is/was absolutely huge with a very passionate fan base. So, it doesn’t surprise me the designer had to do some quick thinking.

My large family had several grammar police. All of them had to correct, and continue to correct me. I was the home school teacher. I thought I couldn’t teach people to be smarter and more capable than I was. Thankfully, they are. And…they learned to speak ‘mom’. So…if I was in the kitchen and told them to put their dirty clothes in the Sink. They didn’t. They picked up their dirty clothes and put them in the hamper by the clothes washer. Knowing that is exactly what I meant for them to do. LOL…

Oh I will definitely throw them a vote. I can identify with their frustration. This property was a mess when we bought it because there was a fire, some kind of explosion too apparently, and then it was abandoned for years and every teenager within 5 miles used it for a place to hide and drink beer and smoke etc. The rubble from the burned mobile home as well as rubble from what used to be a concrete drive and culvert and just years of trash… Ugh. We started cleaning immediately but it was 2019. I got Covid early in 2020 and have yet to get anywhere close to all my strength back. All the kids and teenagers who were helping in '19 have full time jobs now PLUS my sweet old Jolene ('98 Dodge 2500 truck) went to old truck heaven in 2020 so I can’t haul things without paying insane prices. So here it is 2022 and it’s still a disaster. I’ve been trying to consolidate all the junk to one area but it’s slow going. We are planning to get another pickup in the fall when the car is paid off. And I did finally get the barn cleaned out. But really wanting to improve your surroundings and literally being unable to do so is so frustrating. It can really be depressing. I do hope they win!

I’m finally getting around to adding some pictures from our Fiberkind retreat. My sister flew out from CO to join us and she worked on a gorgeous macrame wall hanging–who knew macrame is still thriving!?! I took about a 1/2 dozen different projects, mostly crochet (working on 2 Annie’s Square crochet afghans), my handspun Shetland shawl knitting project that @Char helped me get going on again, a little felting project I wanted to play around with, and my electric spinning wheel. When I got bored with one thing I went to the other! (Can anyone say “ADD”??? :p[IMG2=JSON]{“data-align”:“none”,“data-size”:“full”,“src”:“http://fiberkind.com/image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAPABAP///wAAACH5BAEKAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAICRAEAOw==”}[/IMG2])

One of the things we forgot to take pictures of–we had our very own kitchen and had plenty of fun meals tog

Most of the pictures were taken by Jayne Fisher, one of my friends who attended the event and she has given me permission to share them.

Oh, good grief–I guess the pictures didn’t post! I must have deleted them by mistake!

My sister’s macrame wall hanging!
A cute Halloween quilt
This quilt is going to have a cute little row of doggies appliqued to it. She designed it from a napkin she came across.
Our scrapbooker–she had tales to tell of her travels–so fun!
Spinning fiber with my e-wheel.
All my projects and coffee–hot and cold!
Char and Linda–busy at work!
Another quilt done! (minus the border which came later)

I voted for them–let us know if they get it!

Thank you both! My sister and her husband love their little pioneer house, it is such a cute little place. My sister is going to be 60 in a couple of months, but she was badly injured on the job a few years back when she was working as an EMT, and my brother-in-law is turning 78 very soon, so neither of them is physically able to do it themselves. Their children help when and how they can, but they have all moved further away than is conducive to helping out for very long, plus they have their own families now (I am closer to my sister’s kid’s ages than I am to hers, so they are all well into adulthood). I will definitely keep everyone updated if they win, and I have no objection to anyone who wants to share the link around!

I wish I could have been there for that! I did macrame as a teenager in the 70s but don’t remember much at all and would have loved a refresher! Macrame is awesome!! And it’s very Boho and boho is huge these days.

I voted. I hope they win.

:baseball: Happy opening day

Wow…time is flying by this year. Thanks for the heads up @Sjuly .
I will be rooting for the Giants this year. Why?? Simply because another family member is.
She fell in love with baseball and has gone to several minor league local games. Go! River Cats!!

I voted for them. Good luck!

Thank you both!

They look beautiful, you’ll have to keep us posted on the geranium.

These are beautiful.

How cute!

This is gorgeous!

It all sounds fun, I’m glad you were able to get together again.

This is stunning!

This is lovely yarn.
