Shawlette/Shawl MAL - Chatter

Hi! Do you love small shawls that you can use as a scarf? My favorite are crescent shaped that have a garter or stockinette top and a decorative border. Would you like to join in a MAL? This MAL will run from January 1, 2020 to March 31, 2020.

There is also a Shawl Lover’s Group so we can share our shawl creations all year. Please join us at:

Pattern suggestions from me and other members. Please share your suggestions for your favorite small shawl - knitted or crocheted.

Kris Basta’s “Gallatin Scarf” is a wonderful pattern, and she sells the pattern through Fiberkind’s Marketplace - https://store.fiberkind.com/index.ph…&product_id=43. Though she calls it a scarf, it has a shawlette type of shape and has nice long ends that help it stay around the neck better. It can accommodate any worsted yarn from mildest to wildest. It’s also a really, really fast knit.

The “Reyna Shawl” is free, and also versatile - https://theknittingspace.com/reyna-knitted-lace-shawl/ . It is great for any fingering weight yarn, mild to wild. I made a Reyna with a “what the heck was I thinking when I bought this?!” hot pink/green/brown yarn. Gotta say, it totally worked.

Almost anything by Martina Behm - https://strickmich.frischetexte.de/en/anleitungen/ is wonderful. The “Hitchhiker” is a popular favorite, and “Brickless” is a personal favorite. Most of hers can be worked using several yarn weights, and most work with wild yarns, as well.

@lovestostitch Thank you for sharing the patterns! I hope to add a few more as the days go on.

Well I’ve been using a modification of the sweetheart shawl for 3 of them now, so I’ll probably look at one of your suggestions. I enjoy a simple garter stitch to let the beautiful yarns show off. What’s your plan?

I’m going to do one of those I listed but I haven’t decided yet. Have you done “Close to You?” That is my favorite but I need to try something else. I’ll add a link in post #1.

I have tried “Close to You” a couple of times, but for some reason it gets tight on one edge, and no matter how loose I knit that edge, always too tight.

Which edge gets tight? Did you knit it in wool or acrylic? If in wool, did you try blocking it?

What a great idea!!! IMO, the distinction between a shawlette and a scarf is flexible. The difference between these and a shawl, perhaps less so, but I’ve made several supposed shawls that were not really a proper size to be considered anything but a shawlette or scarf. Soooo, here are some of my ideas:

Kris Basta’s “Gallatin Scarf” is a wonderful pattern, and she sells the pattern through Fiberkind’s Marketplace - https://store.fiberkind.com/index.ph…&product_id=43. Though she calls it a scarf, it has a shawlette type of shape and has nice long ends that help it stay around the neck better. It can accommodate any worsted yarn from mildest to wildest.

I love Martina Behm’s designs too. I’ve done a couple of Hitchhikers and a Leftie. Leftie is one of my favorites to use when it is cold. It makes a great winter scarf and had so much interest with the stripes and the leafy ends.

They’re so darn versatile and easy to wear, aren’t they @lovestostitch ? Found a designer on Etsy who’s also out of Germany, and several of her designs remind me of Martina Behm’s aesthetic. The designer is Melsknitwear: https://etsy.me/35XySIt

I look at Shawlette’s as something doesn’t reach the bottom of your back, can easily be worn like a lightweight scarf, definitely not as big (maybe in the 15" or less height range) – hopefully a one skein wonder – I don’t know if this is what you had in mind.

Red Heart Leaves Shawl (a little challenge?)

@lovestostitch - would you mind if I edited post #1 for pattern links so they are all in one spot?

Oooh - I love December Dunes and Red Heart Dramatically Stunning Leaves.

@Char - yes, please edit and put all the links together.

@Char - that Red Heart Dramatically Stunning Leaves is really appealing to me and it is accomplished with one skein of Red Heart’s It’s A Wrap Hues. Very interesting yarn. It is sportweight in acrylic and cotton. The only problem is that the yarn isn’t widely available. I only saw it on the Red Heart website and Amazon. It would be even better if Michael’s or JoAnn’s had it and I could get it with a coupon!

Hmmm - it isn’t easy to find. Darn. I did find some in the “Mosiac” colorway on eBay and govets.com (never heard of that site have you?)

I wonder if another cake style yarn would work. Maybe Premier DK (available at Joann’s) or something similar?

I was thinking I would use this yarn (I have a few colors that I think would work…):

https://www.herrschners.com/product/herrschners%26%23174-+pastry+petite+yarn.do?sortby=ourPicks&refType=&from=Search

@Char - if you look at the different cakes, It’s a Wrap Hues has a lot of the main color and splashes of the other colors. I’m not sure you would get the right distribution of colors in a different cake. Amazon’s price is better than ebay. I just got excited when I saw it was Red Heart thinking I could get it with a 40% off coupon at Michael’s or JoAnn’s.

@lovestostitch yes I was thinking the same thing. After comparing closer the balls I have vs these you are definitely right - would not result in the same appearance.

I don’t see it on Amazon.

Free shipping at Yarnspirations today though

@Char - that’s weird. I saw it on Amazon earlier but not now. I think I’ll put that pattern on hold and see if the yarn becomes available locally. I have a pretty skein I’ve been wanting to use.

@lovestostitch I was thinking about the leaves this morning… I am wondering if it could easily be done with solids. I have a lot of heritage solids that might work up, with one solid being the “main” color. ??

@Char - I think it can easily be done by using different yarns. The only benefit to using the Red Heart yarn is it comes all together with the coordinating shades. If you are talking Cascade Heritage yarn, I urge caution. I had a terrible experience with red Cascade Heritage bleeding badly and ruining my project. The worst part was that I contacted Cascade and they told me it is normal for their superwash yarn to bleed. I would never use Cascade Heritage in a colorwork project. They also told me they would issue a credit for the yarn to the yarn shop where I bought it but they never did. I don’t buy Cascade any more. I’m also very careful now to prewash yarn to see if it bleeds before spending the time on a colorwork project.

@lovestostitch , I’m so glad you brought this up, as I’m hoping to use the Cascade Heritage for my 3 temperature scarves. I will do some pre wash and do vinegar soak if necessary.
