Another thing that might help with the machine is to rethread top and bobbin. I don’t recall what machine you have but on my featherweight the bobbin run has a notch that has to be directly up and nested or all heck breaks loose.
It is a Singer 401a. I figured out one of the problems (I had the wrong size bobbin in ) and rethreaded the top, making sure I had everything where it was supposed to be. Now, the top thread is doing great, with nice, even stitches, but the bottom is skipping several stitches in a row, so it is just a bunch of long threads between a few loose stitches. I put the sewing machine in time-out for today because it was driving me nuts, but I’m going to try again tomorrow. As I am messing with it, I am learning more. I’ve now got the hang of how to thread it properly and have finally learned how to get the bobbin thread to come up properly! I’ve found a guy on YouTube who is pretty expert with this machine so I’m going to watch a few more of his videos and see if he can show me something I’ve missed.
