Greetings and happy fall ya’all!
I’m starting to think about something for my firefighters for Christmas this year. It’s tough.
I used to work for the City and I knew our firemen. They invited me to lunch at the firehouse. One thing I learned is that they were really into cooking. They have time for that since they stay in the firehouse for extended periods of time and have to eat their meals there. Do you know if your firemen are into cooking? You make cute bowl cozies! Maybe some bowl cozies made out of firemen themed fabric. Like fire hydrants! Some quilted potholders. You could put it together in a basket with some food treats.
My firefighters are volunteers - have other jobs, so I don’t really know. I made them some bowl cozies a couple years ago.
I think I’m making some coasters - pics to follow. I picked up some Purdue colors, some colts colors, patriotic colors, and firefighter fabric. So they’ll have a mix to choose from.
I have another retreat next week so I think I’ll work on them there.
Very nice, I love the fall colors. What is the multicolored yarn that is kinda hiding between the two black stripes?
A bit of tonight’s work on the faceplate of the old Singer. I cleaned and polished the parts of the tension mechanism shown detached. I have a little more disassembly to do to get at everything; I’ll polish the small parts by hand, de-gunk the main plate, and then use jewelers’ flex shaft tools to bring up the final shine. The main plate will get a coat of ProtectaClear once I’m done polishing it, which should keep it in great shape for a long while.
I’ve been using MAAS metal polish for the small parts. Great stuff, smells like lavender. Takes a little bit of rubbing and scrubbing on the corroded bits – not quite wipe-on wipe-off for this application – but it does a good job, as you can see.
Oh no, have I scared everyone off with my filthy ugly face(plate)? Here’s something prettier. Probable charity quilt, hand-pieced, will be quilt-as-you-go for manageability. Top is more mask scrap/stash on hand, backing is stash yardage which I absolutely adore.
Impressive!

So pretty!
How are they doing this year?
I’m somewhat restless and all over the place - I keep starting projects, not finishing any - here’s a sample swatch of me testing the needle size for my next project - a sweater - I feel comfortable in pink - it’s not as “piggy” pink as in the picture - a little more of a dusty rose colour
I love all shades of pink.
The nights are getting cooler. Days are still hot. Why we are having 100+ afternoons is crazy. It’s October!
But it makes me want to knit. I have a couple of sweaters I vow to finish this month.
My thumb arthritis is healed (at least for awhile.).
I agree. Way to hot for this time in October. We were over 100 again yesterday.
Haven’t been able to start the garden yet. Just waiting for the weather to break.
I hope you get to work on those sweaters.
What do you all do for your arthritis? Do you take meds or get shots in the joint or anything? Asking so I know what to expect.
I haven’t been around much because life kind of exploded recently! My oldest had to have 2 teeth extracted suddenly so I’ve been taking care of him. I am having cataract surgery on my right eye today (waiting for the drops to soak into my eyes now!) and on my left in 2 weeks. They are hopeful that I will only need reading glasses after both surgeries are done! I haven’t been able to play with my sewing machine again because the deadline for the next issue of Blocked is coming up and I’ve been trying to get everything done before my eye surgery, just in case. I’ve also been working on an entry for the Co&Crafting Democracy fiber art exhibit and trying to get it done in time for the mid-October submission date. Wish me luck with the surgery and I’ll “see” you all in a few days!
I saw the doctor today for my surgery post-op appointment and he said everything looks good. They took the right lens out of my glasses because the prescription is now completely wrong for that eye but now I can see out of my left eye properly at least. The vision in my right eye is wonky because it is still inflamed from the surgery. The doctor said he was able to correct my distance vision pretty well and is still hopeful that I will just need reading glasses once I’ve had both surgeries and the swelling goes down. It is a little weird being able to see properly through one eye but only see distance through the other (and distance is still blurry in the right eye). Without my glasses, I can’t see much, but with them, it is kinda like wearing 3D glasses but not watching a 3D movie! Looking at the computer is kinda nauseating, so I will be avoiding it for a bit longer but wanted to update people!
in Finland it’s typical to do both eyes at the same time - but as two different surgeries - first one eye, then change all the equipment and do the other eye
Glad things went well!!
